My Plan For the Trump Administration
To my constituents,
Every day since January 20th has brought fear, frustration and confusion to the American people. I’ve heard from you that you feel trapped in a never-ending crisis, hurtling toward the collapse of democracy, with new emergencies and unprecedented actions unfolding every single day.
So, what are we going to do?
My Plan:
-
Protect Our Institutions from Unprecedented Takeover by Elon Musk
-
Safeguard Congressional Allocated Funding
-
Maintain Our Leadership in Global Politics and Protect Our Allies
-
Restore a Governing Majority
-
Build a Better Future That Works for All—Not Just the Elite
Many of these goals are being fought in the courts, with state attorneys general and governors leading lawsuits to block illegal actions from the Trump administration. Some of these battles are being fought here in Congress. As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I oversee agencies like the Treasury Department, SEC, CFPB, FDIC, and more. I’m using every tool available to investigate and expose the illegal actions coming from the Trump administration, including the troubling access that Elon Musk has to Treasury systems.
But it’s also a battle in the court of public opinion. Thanks to the efforts of organizations and individuals, we’ve been able to shine a light on the stories of people who are directly impacted by these unlawful actions, and push back against those attacks.
While we may not have the majority, House Republicans repeatedly demonstrated last term that they cannot pass must-pass bills without Democratic support, and are divided even among their party. As Leader Jeffries has made clear, we will not give that support if Republicans simultaneously attempt to cut Social Security, Medicaid, or other essential programs. We may be able to use procedural tools to obstruct, delay, raise the temperature, and ensure that Republicans feel the pressure of the American people.
Let me be clear on my position: This fight isn’t just about winning partisan battles. It’s about standing up for the values that matter—the American Dream, the Constitution, democracy, and the well-being of your family and community. It’s about embracing and uplifting the overwhelming majority of Americans who know Nazis are bad, the good guys won the Civil War, and the Enlightenment was a step forward in human progress. It’s not only about correcting the wrongs of the Trump administration, but about actively building toward a future rooted in an America that works for all of us, not just for the few at the top.
And you can help. This is not the first time our country has been attacked from within, nor is it the first time that the Federal government has willfully refused to obey the laws of the United States. We moved forward and emerged stronger from those crises because individual people - from Mamie Till to the kids at Parkland High School stood up with love in their heart and righteous endurance to move public will. Let the example of their contagious courage inspire you to stand up now. Whatever you do, know that in a world full of fear, people are looking to be inspired. And bravery in service of the greater good is always inspirational.
Here’s what I’m certain of. None of us individually is going to fix this. But all of us, collectively, working towards the same goals, putting everything we have in service of democracy, equality, and love, will succeed. We’ll learn from, inspire, and uplift each other. In the short term, fear and hatred is much easier to mobilize. But love only loses if it gives up.
Let’s get to work.
Sean
