Pelosi names U.S. Rep. Sean Casten to climate crisis committee

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has selected U.S. Rep. Sean Casten as one of nine Democrats to serve on the new Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

Before winning election to serve the 6th Congressional District, the Downers Grove Democrat received an undergraduate degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and master's degrees in engineering management and biochemical engineering.

"This new Select Committee will spearhead Democrats' work to develop innovative, effective solutions to prevent and reverse the climate crisis," Pelosi said in a statement Thursday. "It will generate the energy and action required to permanently reduce pollution so that we can honor our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet for future generations."

Others on the committee are Chairman Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Reps. Kathy Castor of Florida, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Julia Brownley of California, Jared Huffman of California, Mike Levin of California, A. Donald McEachin of Virginia and Joe Neguse of Colorado.

"Having spent the last 20 years profitably reducing greenhouse gas emissions, I can offer the Select Committee real-world expertise and a lifelong commitment to action on climate change," Casten said in a statement. "I look forward to working with my colleagues under the leadership of [Chairman] Castor to address the existential challenge to our species."
