Casten’s Clean Energy Provisions Expected to Pass as Part of House NDAA Vote Tonight
Washington, D.C. – Tonight, U.S. Representative Sean Casten (D-IL) will vote to pass the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022--includingclean energy provisions he introduced and secured. Casten's provisions would require 10% of existing and future military instillations to reach net zero emissions by 2035. It will also require a report on the status of the current DoD energy security goal which aims to have the agency produce or procure not less than 25% renewable energy by 2025.
DoD consumes more energy than any other federal agency – roughly sixteen times that of the second-largest consumer in the federal government, the post office. These continued energy-use patterns by DoD increase overall energy costs, constrain DoD's autonomy and self-sufficiency, and leave the agency more vulnerable to the physical impacts of climate change.
Casten said, "Climate change is an urgent and growing threat to our national security. With the Department of Defense consuming 77% of all energy used by the federal government, I am proud to see my provisions to help our military instillations lower their carbon footprint included in tonight's National Defense Reauthorization and will continue fighting to make climate a central consideration of all national security decisions."
