U.S. Rep. Sean Casten says Oak Forest office will focus on constituent services

by Jeff Vorva

After U.S. Rep. Sean Casten sliced the red ribbon with some scissors Saturday, he said he is hoping it will represent a slicing of red tape for south suburban residents. The 6th District congressman raised his arms in triumph during a ceremony at 15350 Oak Park Ave., Oak Forest, the home of the Downers Grove Democrat’s second satellite office.   Casten said the office will be supplied with caseworkers who can help with issues related to federal agencies. “You will be able … Continue Reading

Why lawmakers want to save snot otters

by Maxine Joselow

Congress may be out this week, but Reps. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) and Sean Casten (D-Ill.) are busy drafting a counterproposal to House Republicans’ plan to speed up the permitting process for energy projects. Their forthcoming bill, dubbed the Clean Electricity Transmission Acceleration Act, seeks to accelerate the permitting process for renewable energy projects and the transmission lines needed to carry clean electricity nationwide. It’s a direct response … Continue Reading

The congressmember extending an ESG olive branch

by Jordan Wolman

Rep. Sean Casten’s desire to help create rules of the road for the massive and rapidly expanding world of environmental, social and governance investing has thrust him into an uphill battle to find common ground between financial firms and GOP lawmakers accusing them of bias against fossil fuel interests. As co-founder of the Congressional Sustainable Investment Caucus, the Illinois Democrat is trying to promote ESG policymaking that provides protections and transparency for market … Continue Reading

Our democracy is broken. Here’s how we can fix It

by Representative Sean Casten

Why can’t our government do things that are overwhelmingly popular? How many times have you asked, or heard someone ask, that question? The simplistic answer is some form of individual failure. Corruption, dishonesty, ego — you know the list. But there is a bigger reason that doesn’t get acknowledged enough: because our Founding Fathers didn’t really trust the will of the majority. They didn’t believe people could be trusted with the direct election of the … Continue Reading

Biden’s first veto spent on anti-market resolution

by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Representative Sean Casten (D-ILL.), Opinion Contributers

Congressional Republicans have launched a new battle against capitalism. Their latest expression of disdain for the free market was a resolution blocking the consideration of climate, governance and other risks in retirement plan investing. In response, President Biden’s first veto was necessary to defend sensible and long-standing investment principles that congressional Republicans now deride as “woke capitalism.” Let’s be clear what they mean: … Continue Reading

Chicago area congressman, doctor reflect on year of war in Ukraine

by Chris Tye

CHICAGO (CBS) – One year since the war in Ukraine began, we took a look back, and forward: from Illinois legislators to Chicago-area medical personnel who've made the trip to Ukraine over the last 12 months. They spoke to CBS 2's Chris Tye. It's Europe's biggest war since World War II, but on the night before it began, it was Google traffic maps revealing the slow roll of Russian forces into Ukraine and revealed this war would be different than any that preceded it. Over the past … Continue Reading

Who's going to the State of the Union? Illinois lawmakers reveal their guests

by Marni Pyke

A Midway International Airport worker. A doctor who assists women with abortions. The head of a service for homeless individuals. All three are among guests invited by members of Illinois' congressional delegation to attend President Joe Biden's State of the Union address tonight. With Republicans controlling the House and Democrats in charge of the Senate, it's expected to be a raucous, partisan night, but U.S. Rep. Bill Foster chose a nonpolitical guest: Kane County Health Department … Continue Reading

Majority rules? This Democrat wants to talk about anti-majoritarian bias

by Jim Saksa

Sean Casten thinks the federal government is broken. This is, to put it mildly, not a controversial position to take. Only 20 percent of the public told the Pew Research Center last year that they trust Washington to do what’s right just about always or most of the time. The federal government tied for second-to-last in Gallup’s poll of how the public sees various sectors of the economy, coming up even with the pharmaceutical industry but ahead of oil and … Continue Reading

by Alicia Fabbre

Flanked by fellow congressmen, state lawmakers and county board members, U.S. Rep. Sean Casten on Monday repeated calls for DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick to retract a statement about the state's new gun ban or resign. Earlier this month, Mendrick issued a statement that said he believed the state's new ban on high-powered guns and high-capacity magazines was unconstitutional. Cummings Post Office, renamed in honor of a former Streamwood resident and Hoffman Estates High School graduate killed in action while serving in Iraq. A bill signed into law by President Joe Biden at the end of last year renamed the post office after Cummings, a Marine who was 22 years old when he died in a 2006 roadside bomb attack. Cummings lived in Crystal Lake before moving to Streamwood. U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Sean … Continue Reading

US Rep. Sean Casten joins rest of Illinois delegation watching GOP fight over who becomes next speaker

by John Byrne

As many Americans returned to work Tuesday following the holiday break, U.S. Rep. Sean Casten of Downers Grove was in Washington and joining other Democratic members of Congress waiting to see how Republicans will settle their fight over the House speakership. It’s a strange moment for Casten. Starting his third term representing Illinois’ 6th District in the west and southwest suburbs, he’s perhaps more politically secure than ever. The 54.4% of the vote he received … Continue Reading

The Levin-Casten transmission bill

by Nick Sobczyk , Jael Holzman

Reps. Mike Levin and Sean Casten this morning released transmission and permitting legislation — the most ambitious bill on those issues that Democrats have put out so far. Why it matters: The Clean Electricity and Transmission Acceleration Act will become part of the current permitting debate and set the stage for talks on any future package over the next few years. That's especially true if Democrats succeed in winning back control of the House next year. [This is] the Democratic … Continue Reading

Ban members of Congress from buying, trading stock while in office

There's an iron rule of investing: Unless you're Warren Buffett or have access to insider information, you won't make money trying to outsmart the stock market. In fact, according to a report by CNBC, nearly 80% of professional investors fail to beat the market every year and hardly anyone does over a 10-year period. And yet, members of Congress continue to have unusual success trading stocks while in office. Between 2004 and 2010, research found that members of Congress beat the stock market … Continue Reading
