Casten and Huffman Statement on David Malpass Stepping Down from World Bank
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressmen Sean Casten (IL-06) and Jared Huffman (CA-02), who urged President Biden last fall to advocate for the removal of David Malpass as president of the World Bank Group, have released the following statement regarding the announcement from Mr. Malpass that he intends to step down from his role:
“We are in a climate crisis, and it’s imperative for world leaders across every sector to not only acknowledge that reality, but to take meaningful steps to protect our warming planet. David Malpass’ statements last September made it clear he could not fulfill that standard. Global leaders must be held accountable for their words and actions. That’s why we previously urged President Biden to advocate for his removal.
“As a leader of responsible and sustainable financing for developing countries, whoever succeeds Mr. Malpass must be willing to accelerate the global transition to a clean energy future to improve living standards, reduce poverty, and encourage growth.”
