Casten Introduces New Privileged Resolution To Force House Vote On Gaetz Report

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) introduced a new privileged resolution to force a vote by the full House of Representatives within two legislative days to require the House Ethics Committee to release its report into allegations of serious misconduct by former Congressman Matt Gaetz.

“The Committee on Ethics has, on many occasions, released its reports on former members,” said Rep. Sean Casten. “Resigning from Congress should not allow Members to avoid accountability for allegations as serious as those faced by Matt Gaetz. Withholding this report from the American people would impede the dignity and integrity of the legislative proceedings of the House.”

Speaker Johnson allowed Rep. Casten’s previous resolution to expire during last week’s recess.

An updated copy of the resolution can be found HERE. A video of Rep. Casten noticing his resolution today can be found HERE.

The House Committee on Ethics has a history of releasing reports and continuing investigations into allegations of serious misconduct for former Members who resigned:

  • In 1987, the Committee released a report on its investigation into allegations of the misuse of campaign funds, improper gifts, the failure to reveal business interests on his financial disclosure, and the acceptance of a bribe by former Representative Bill Boner (D-TN) following his resignation from Congress.
  • In 1990, the Committee released a report on its investigations of sexual misconduct allegations, which included having sexual intercourse with a minor and making sexual advances towards a congressional employee, against former Representative Don Lukens (R-OH) following his resignation from Congress.
  • In 2006, the Committee released a report on its investigation of sexual misconduct allegations, which included sending sexually explicit messages to at least one minor, against former Representative Mark Foley (R-FL) following his resignation from Congress.
  • In 2011, the Committee continued its investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against former Representative Eric Massa (D-NY) following his resignation from Congress.

Last month, Rep. Casten led 97 House Democrats in a letter to the House Ethics Committee requesting the immediate release of its report into allegations of serious misconduct by former Congressman Matt Gaetz.
