Casten statement on Elementary School Shooting Killing 14 Children in Texas

Downers Grove, IL (May 25, 2022) – Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) today released the following statement after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas that killed fourteen children and a teacher and injured others:

Casten said, "10 years after Sandy Hook, 14 children and their teacher were gunned down at an elementary school in Texas. My heart is shattered for every family grieving and afraid today. Only in America will parents feel forced to accept the fear they feel sending their kids to school tomorrow—because only in America do we let Republican politicians trade NRA donations in exchange for our children's lives."

"On the Senate floor this afternoon, Senator Chris Murphy asked, 'Why do you go through all of the hassle of getting this job if your answer is that as the slaughter increases, as our kids run for their lives, we do nothing?'

"We here in Congress need to wake up, and finally do our jobs, so that we can keep kids alive. If that's not your priority, you should you resign."

Casten recently led members of the Gun Violence Prevention task-force in calling on House Leadership to advance a comprehensive slate of violence prevention legislation in the face of the worsening gun violence epidemic–including his Gun Trafficker Detection Act (H.R. 5245), to stop the flow of Illegally trafficked guns by requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement within 48 hours.
