Casten Statement on the Supreme Court Striking Down Louisiana Abortion Law
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06) released the following statement after the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision in June Medical Services v. Russo, striking down a Louisiana abortion law that unconstitutionally restricted women's access to care:
Casten said, "In a time where women's reproductive rights are under constant attack, this morning's Supreme Court ruling is a victory: it upholds a woman's right to an abortion by rejecting the latest thinly veiled ploy to undermine choice by effectively eliminating access to care.
"Abortion restrictions like Louisiana's clinic shutdown law have one purpose: to take away women's ability to make personal health care decisions. Every woman has a constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions, including abortion care, but that means nothing if she cannot access it.
"While this morning's ruling is a sigh of relief, we cannot ignore that the Trump administration continues to attempt to undermine equitable access to health care for women in our country every day. I will continue to work with my colleagues to defend access to affordable health care for all women, no matter where they live, where they work, or where they get their health insurance."
