Casten to McCarthy: Your Failures Take Nutrition Assistance From 7 Million Women and Children
Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, September 26th, 2023) - Today, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) took to the floor of the House of Representatives to call out Speaker Kevin McCarthy on his failure to keep his word and his appeasement of far-right members in Congress. Casten said the following:
“Earlier this year, Speaker McCarthy stood in the Oval Office with the President of the United States and negotiated a deal to raise the debt limit and fund the government. Instead of keeping his end of the deal, Speaker McCarthy is now refusing to even allow bills to come to the floor that would avert a shutdown and honor his promise.
“His failures mean that 1.3 million active-duty troops will continue to work but not be paid for their service. His failures mean that 7 million women and children may not receive the nutrition assistance they rely on. His failures mean that you can expect flight disruptions, less border security and fewer food and rail safety inspections.
“There’s an old saying: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Shame on Speaker McCarthy for forcing the American people to suffer for his foolishness.”
