President Biden Signs Casten’s Clean Energy Provisions Into Law
Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden signed into law clean energy provisions U.S. Representative Sean Casten (D-IL) introduced and secured as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2022. Casten's provisions will require 10% of existing and future military instillations to reach net zero emissions by 2035. It will also require a report on the status of the current DoD energy security goal which aims to have the agency produce or procure not less than 25% renewable energy by 2025.
DoD consumes more energy than any other federal agency – roughly sixteen times that of the second-largest consumer in the federal government, the post office. These continued energy-use patterns by DoD increase overall energy costs, constrain DoD's autonomy and self-sufficiency, and leave the agency more vulnerable to the physical impacts of climate change.
Casten said, "Climate change is an urgent and growing threat to our national security. With the Department of Defense consuming 77% of all energy used by the federal government, I am proud to see my provisions to help our military instillations lower their carbon footprint signed into law by President Biden and will continue fighting to make climate a central consideration of all national security decisions."
